Soft Frosted Sugar Cookies

Psst…guess what? Cookie season is almost here! YAY!!! If you are anything like me you love the holiday season for so many reasons, but cookies well, they just make everything that much better.

Holiday baking brings comfort to the most enjoyable season, wouldn’t you agree? I love the scent that all the delicious goodies bring to the kitchen. Wafting scents of sugary sweets are definitely enjoyable in my book!

Now I’m not a fancy cookie person. Once a year I break out my cookie cutters and make good old fashioned from scratch sugar cookies and gingerbread cookies. The rest of my holiday cookies are easier to make and just plain yummy.

Take for instance these amazing Soft Frosted Sugar Cookies that I’m sharing today. There’s nothing complicated about this recipe. In fact, let your kids help, get them in the holiday baking spirit.

Soft Frosted Sugar Cookies are just the kind of cookie that I love. Soft and tender, sweet and delicious. They make wonderful additions to any holiday festivity, add them to cookie platters, and don’t forget Santa…they are definitely Santa approved.

Some tips for making Soft Frosted Sugar Cookies:

  • Use unsalted butter for just the right flavor.
  • Want to make these cookies extra festive? Add a drop or two of red or green food coloring to the dough or frosting.

  • Get more festive with a variety of fun sprinkles.

Simple steps for making Soft Frosted Sugar Cookies:

In a medium-sized mixing bowl, using a hand mixer, beat butter and cream cheese together.

Add sugar and beat until smooth and fluffy (about 1-2 minutes).

Next, add in the egg, egg white, and vanilla and combine (scrape down the sides of the bowl as needed).

Add the flour, baking powder, and salt. Mix well on low speed until a soft dough forms. The dough will be sticky.

Refrigerate dough for 30 minutes.

Once the dough is chilled, preheat the oven to 350 degrees and line baking sheets with parchment paper.

Fold in holiday sprinkles into the cookie dough before you roll into balls.

Scoop dough into 1” cookie balls – you will need to put some flour on your hands to help you roll the dough into balls. (I used a cookie scoop to make the cookie balls the same size).

Place the cookie dough balls about 2” apart on the prepared cookie sheet.

Bake for 13-15 minutes until the tops of the cookies start to brown.

Let cool completely on the cookie sheet.

While the cookies cool, mix all of the frosting ingredients (butter, powdered sugar, vanilla extract, and salt) together until smooth.

Once the cookies are cooled completely, frost the cookies and garnish with holiday sprinkles.

The frosting will cool and set over time, but if you want the process to go faster, put the cookies in the refrigerator to cool completely.
