Irish Coffee

If you didn’t know, I LOVE coffee.  Whether it’s in a vanilla latte, salted caramel mocha frappuccino, or a cinnamon dolce iced latte, I always am a big fan.  With St. Patrick’s Day right around the corner, I wanted to make try making the perfect Irish coffee.  Now these are always my go-to when I go to Irish pub restaurants here in the States but making it at home was way easier than I thought and so much cheaper.

Now all you need for this recipe is some hot coffee, brown sugar, whiskey, and heavy whipping cream.  You just combine the coffee and brown sugar, add in the whiskey, and top with loosely whipped whipped cream.  That’s it! Now it’s usually served in a glass mug but if you don’t have one, don’t worry.  Just use a regular mug, you just won’t be able to see the pretty layers of coffee and whipped cream.

Common Questions About Making Irish Coffee

What is Irish coffee?

Irish coffee an alcoholic drink made from coffee, brown sugar, whiskey, and heavy whipping cream.

What kind of whiskey should I use?

Traditionally, you use Irish whiskey such as Jameson Irish whiskey but if all your grocery store has is American whiskey (like mine), it’ll still taste great!

Do I need to make homemade whipped cream?

Irish coffee calls for a softer whipped cream than what you will find in a can so I suggest that you do whip it yourself until soft peaks form.  It will not be as firm as normal whipped cream but it will hold a bit of shape.

Why do I have to warm my glass?

You fill your glass with warm water before adding anything into it to help warm it up and prevent it from cracking once it has been filled.  Just leave it in there for about 3 minutes before dumping it out.

What kind of coffee should I use?

Really any kind you like whether it is decaf, regular, half-caf, etc.  Just brew it like you would normally.

What can I top an Irish coffee with?

I like to top Irish coffee with chocolate shavings or a dusting of cocoa powder but you can’t go wrong with a bit of chocolate sauce or caramel sauce.
