Hot Toddy

Whenever it’s a cold and wet winter day, I want to make a hot toddy.  Hot toddies are a classic cocktail that is traditionally enjoyed around bedtime or just generally in the evening on those same kind of drizzly days as a way to warm up.  I really enjoy how bright and refreshing they taste with the burst of lemon flavor balanced by the bourbon and honey in it.

Now this hot toddy recipe makes about 1 serving so if you plan on making it for more than just yourself, then I suggest doubling or tripling the recipe.  I like to serve hot toddies with a slice of lemon and a cinnamon stick so give that a try to make it feel even more special.

Common Questions About Making a Hot Toddy

What is a hot toddy?

A hot toddy is a traditional cocktail made with lemon juice, honey, bourbon, and water that is served hot.

Will a hot toddy help with a cold?

If you are on any medication for being sick, please skip the bourbon in the recipe as it can interact with the medication badly.  While it is somewhat associated with being a drink made when sick, it is also a popular cocktail to make in the evening before bed or on cold, rainy days.

What alcohol is in a hot toddy?

A hot toddy is made with bourbon but you could always use whiskey instead.

Can I serve it cold?

Sure can! Just use cold water instead of hot water.
