Common Questions About Making Honey Buffalo Chicken Wings
What are honey buffalo chicken wings?
Honey buffalo chicken wings are chicken wings that are either baked or air fried and then tossed in a homemade honey buffalo sauce.
Should I use whole wings or portions?
Either! I used portions (split chicken wings) but the full wing also works.
How long do chicken wings last?
I would suggest eating them the day that you make them because they start to get soggy and no one wants a soggy wing!
How many chicken wings does this recipe make?
This recipe makes about 4 servings but you can always increase it if you are serving more people. I only used a 1 pound bag of wings.
What can I serve chicken wings with?
Some of my favorite chicken wing dips are –
- Blue Cheese Dip
- Ranch Dressing
- Smoked Gouda Dip

Ingredient Notes –
- I like using chicken wing potions, but use whole wings if you prefer.
- Flour helps the wings crisp when cooked. Don’t skip it! For extra crispy wings, mix the flour with 1 tablespoon of cornstarch.
- Garlic powder and kosher salt season the chicken while they cook.
- I used a medium spice hot sauce – Frank’s Red Hot to be exact. Feel free to use any brand you like – just keep in mind you’re using a lot of it so you don’t want it to be too spicy.
- Honey adds a great sweetness to the chicken wings.
- Butter helps the sauce melt and adds a bit of richness to the sauce.

Honey Buffalo Chicken Wings
Honey Buffalo Chicken Wings – The PERFECT chicken wing recipe! Crispy chicken wings drenched in a sweet and spicy honey buffalo sauce. Instructions for cooking either the oven or air fryer.
Ingredients
For the Chicken Wings
- 1 pound chicken wing portions
- 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
For the Honey Buffalo Sauce
- 1/2 cup hot sauce
- 1/4 cup honey
- 2 tablespoons butter
Instructions
For the Chicken Wings (Air Fryer Instructions)
- Add the chicken wings, flour, garlic powder, and salt to a large bowl and toss to combine.
- Spray your air fryer basket with olive oil spray (or brush with olive oil) and add the chicken wings in a single layer. Make sure not to overcrowd the basket or they won't get crispy.
- Spray the top of the wings with olive oil spray and cook at 400 degrees F for 8 minutes.
- Flip the chicken wings and cook for an additional 8 minutes.
- Remove the wings from the air fryer and set them aside while you make the sauce.
For the Chicken Wings (Oven Instructions)
- Preheat oven to 450 degrees F and line a baking sheet with aluminum foil. Set aside.
- Add the chicken wings, flour, garlic powder, and salt to a large bowl and toss to combine.
- Arrange the wings evenly on the sheet pan so that there is space between each wing.
- Place sheet pan in the oven and bake for 30-40 minutes, flipping halfway through. The wings should be golden-brown and crispy with an internal temperature of 165 degrees F. The wings may need more time if they are larger.
- Remove the wings from the oven and set them aside while you make the sauce.
For the Honey Buffalo Sauce
- Combine the hot sauce, honey, and butter in a small microwave safe bowl.
- Microwave on HIGH for 1 minute. Whisk to combine. If the butter is not fully melted, heat for an additional 30 seconds.
- Pour the sauce over the wings and serve immediately. I don't recommend storing the chicken wings as they tend to lose their crispiness in the fridge - just enjoy them all they day they're made.
