Cantaloupe Agua Fresca
I love when the fruit starts really pouring into the produce departments after a long winter of ho-hum selection. The freshest berries and melons that just start the warm weather season off with a bang. My kids have gone through 3 packages of strawberries just this week, we’ve been waiting for the really good ones to arrive.
Even with a shorter growing season here in Michigan, we have some notoriety for melons. Just one town over they celebrate a beloved local variety known as the “Howell Melon”. In truth, it is a hybrid cantaloupe. Rumor even has it that during the Great Depression a “traveler” gave some seeds to a local farmer and the rest is history as they say. If you ever find yourself at the Howell Melon Fest, try the Melon Ice Cream, you can thank me later.
One melon, in particular, is grabbing our attention today, the beloved Cantaloupe. I think the name is fun, in fact, the name originates from the area in Europe where they were first grown: the caste of Cantalupo, in the Marca d’Ancona, Italy.
We’re making Cantaloupe Agua Fresca beverages today, a non-alcoholic drink that just screams summertime! Not only is it refreshing, it simply couldn’t be easier to make.
