Boozy Grasshopper Parfaits

I’m a huge fan of layered desserts! There’s just something oh so delicious about getting a variety of flavors in one yummy spoonful.

Trifles, parfaits, layered desserts…I’ve made them all. Many times I opt for the good old parfait simply because it is an individual serving and makes for a nice presentation.

What exactly is a Parfait?

Well, traditionally it is much fancier than the layered desserts I make. In France, a parfait is a rich cold dessert made with whipped cream, eggs, and often fruit. Around here, it can sometimes have whipped cream, ice cream or fruit.

I’m not a diehard keeper of cooking rules, so at my house, a parfait can have a wide variety of ingredients. Today I’m introducing an adult treat that’s perfect for St. Patrick’s Day and beyond.

Boozy Grasshopper Parfaits are such an easy to make sweet treat perfect for the St. Patrick’s Day holiday. With just a few simple ingredients you can whip up this eye-catching dessert!

Obviously the name Boozy Grasshopper Parfaits gives away the fact that these contain a smidgen of alcohol. I used Creme de Menthe, which you will also find in The Tipsy Shamrock cocktail. Click HERE to check it out!

What is Creme de Menthe?

Crème de menthe is a sweet, mint-flavored alcoholic beverage. It is available in a colorless version and a green version. I used a colorless variety.

Better yet, what is a Grasshopper? (No, I don’t mean the insect!)

A Grasshopper is a sweet, mint-flavored, after-dinner drink. The name of the drink derives from its green color, which comes from crème de menthe. A bar in the French Quarter of New Orleans, Louisiana, Tujague’s, claims the drink was invented in 1918.

Can you make this dessert non-alcoholic?

Yes, definitely! Omit the Creme de Menthe, add in a 1/4 teaspoon Peppermint Extract to the Cool-Whip.

Can you use homemade whipped cream?

Yes, of course! It’ll be simply amazing with homemade whipped cream.

What ingredients do you need to make Boozy Grasshopper Parfaits?

  • Instant Chocolate Pudding
  • Cool-Whip non-dairy topping
  • Creme de Menthe
  • Green food color
  • Oreo Cookies
  • OPTIONAL DECOR: Andes Mint Candies and sprinkles

Some tips for making Boozy Grasshopper Parfaits:

  • I prefer refrigerating the prepared chocolate pudding prior to assembling the parfaits.
  • If you have green Creme de Menthe, you may omit the green food color.
  • Mint Oreos make a great addition, I used regular Oreos.
  • I do not recommend assembling early in the day. The Oreo layer can get a bit soggy and the chocolate layer oozes into the Cool-Whip layer. Assemble just prior to serving.
  • Have extra Girl Scout Thin Mint Cookies, use them instead of Oreos.
  • You can also make this dessert with instant vanilla pudding.

Simple steps for making Boozy Grasshopper Parfaits:

Prepare the instant chocolate pudding according to package directions.

Mix 1-2 drops of green food coloring into the Cool-Whip, stir to combine thoroughly.

Mix the Creme de Menthe into the Cool-Whip.

Just prior to serving, layer into glasses. Begin with a layer of chocolate pudding.

Add a layer of the Cool-Whip mixture.

Add a layer of the crushed Oreo Cookies. Repeat layers if desired. Serve immediately.

OPTIONAL DECOR: Andes Mint candy and sprinkles.
